Saturday saw the first Aberdeen Tournie of the season down at Woodside.  With a crowded Touch calendar the field was smaller than normal made up of mostly local teams but our friends from Glasgow and Stirling made the long trip north.  The lovely warm weather though made for a great days Touch and a chance for some of the Italy bound Scotland players to play in the heat, not often available in Aberdeen!!!

The Leopards started off with 3 straight wins in the morning against Hoodlums, Stirling and Sparrows which left a top of the table decider against the Activity Mix Guerillas.  A small squad was reduced even further due to injury so an emergency call went out to off duty Leopards to come and play and even a Meerkat was roped in along the way.  In an entertaining, end to end game our rivals just pipped us to top spot, winning 5-3.

The knockout stages saw us paired with a very strong Firebirds side, containing numerous Scotland internationals past and present.  Despite their strength there were some good plays from the Leopards and we managed to notch some scores, the highlight being Allan MacDonald’s trademark snake hips ghosting past several defenders.  But it wasn't enough and they beat us to reach the final.

In our last game of the day we came up against the Killer B’s in a 3rd/4th place play off.  Despite tired legs and a few knocks the Leopards finished in style running out comfortable winners.  Unfortunately there was to be no icing on the cake, as with the hooter gone we missed out on one last score.  Alan Lilly failed to ground the ball, some would say dropped, when over the line.  The fines tin was hopefully suitably furnished for this indiscretion?

All in all a pleasing finish considering the small squad available and the few knocks we picked up during the day.  The leagues are now in full swing but we move on next weekend to the first STS tournament of the season down in Stirling.  Good luck to all those travelling and enjoy the day.

If you are unable to field a full team, but would still like to take part, please email Christine Kershaw on [email protected] as it may well be possible to join small groups together to form teams.
