The curtain came down on the Aberdeen Touch season at the weekend with the indoor tournament at the Aberdeen Sports Village.
The Leopards put in another fine performance finishing fourth, behind Superhands, Firebirds and Guerilla's. All three teams were packed with Scotland internationals past and present so it was a good effort all round. A second place finish in their group saw them push eventual winners Guerilla's all the way, losing narrowly 4-2 in the first knock out game, and then missed out in the 3rd/4th place play off to Edinburgh based Superhands. All the results for the tournament can be found at the Aberdeen Touch website. Three club members represented Scotland in the recent European Touch Championships in Treviso, Italy.
Dave Vale was part of the victorious Mens Open squad that retained the title from two years ago beating England in a close final 10-8. Well done to Dave and the MO. In the Senior Division, Dave Stone and Duncan Milne come close to securing a bronze medal in the Mens 35 losing 6-5 to France. All the results from the Euro's can be found at Touch Euro's website The Leopards rounded off an impressive Autumn by winning both the League and Cup. With the Summer Cup win its been a very successful season. Well done to all involved.
Full details of the final placings can be found at the Aberdeen Touch website The last week of the Summer League & Cup saw the Leopards take home some silverware by beating the Firebirds to win the Mixed Cup. This followed on from a great semi final win against the Meerkats. Congratulations to all those who made it happen. All the winners can from the Summer League can be found at the ATR website.
There's a break now till the Autumn League gets under way on the 6th of August. Saturday saw the first Aberdeen Tournie of the season down at Woodside. With a crowded Touch calendar the field was smaller than normal made up of mostly local teams but our friends from Glasgow and Stirling made the long trip north. The lovely warm weather though made for a great days Touch and a chance for some of the Italy bound Scotland players to play in the heat, not often available in Aberdeen!!! The Leopards started off with 3 straight wins in the morning against Hoodlums, Stirling and Sparrows which left a top of the table decider against the Activity Mix Guerillas. A small squad was reduced even further due to injury so an emergency call went out to off duty Leopards to come and play and even a Meerkat was roped in along the way. In an entertaining, end to end game our rivals just pipped us to top spot, winning 5-3. The knockout stages saw us paired with a very strong Firebirds side, containing numerous Scotland internationals past and present. Despite their strength there were some good plays from the Leopards and we managed to notch some scores, the highlight being Allan MacDonald’s trademark snake hips ghosting past several defenders. But it wasn't enough and they beat us to reach the final. In our last game of the day we came up against the Killer B’s in a 3rd/4th place play off. Despite tired legs and a few knocks the Leopards finished in style running out comfortable winners. Unfortunately there was to be no icing on the cake, as with the hooter gone we missed out on one last score. Alan Lilly failed to ground the ball, some would say dropped, when over the line. The fines tin was hopefully suitably furnished for this indiscretion? All in all a pleasing finish considering the small squad available and the few knocks we picked up during the day. The leagues are now in full swing but we move on next weekend to the first STS tournament of the season down in Stirling. Good luck to all those travelling and enjoy the day.
